Obituary of George Richard Penfield

PENFIELD, George Richard, age 78, died on December 22nd at his home near Tacoma from complications of heart disease. His daughter, Jennifer, was at his side. We thank family friend Amalia Conde and the hospice team in Tacoma WA for their support.  

George is survived by four children, Dr. Janine Penfield Winters (John) of New Zealand, Jennifer Penfield Nelson (Brian) of Oregon, Gabriella Penfield and Wyett Penfield of Washington; four grandchildren Ella, John, and Cassie Winters and Anson Ramsdell; and brother Glen Penfield (Erin) of Texas. Sister Irene Penfield predeceased him in July, 2022.

George grew up in Cleveland, attending Benedictine High School, Kent State University and Cleveland Marshall Law School. He practiced law, specializing in business law, in Fairview Park from 1971 until his retirement in 2005. George was active in the Rotary Club and helped raise money to eradicate polio. He supported the arts and loved the symphony, the ballet and theatre. Upon retirement, George moved to Washington to pursue his dream of hiking and volunteering on Mount Rainier. George loved the outdoors and as a conservationist supported the Sierra Club and Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance.

Two memorial services will be held, a winter service in the Seattle-Tacoma area and a spring service in the Cleveland area. Friends and associates are invited to either or both.

Sun. May 28, 2023 in Oberlin, Ohio. Joint memorial service for George and his sister Irene with interment of ashes at Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin. Time and venue TBD, to be updated in January.
