Barbara Sullivan

Obituary of Barbara R. Sullivan

Barbara Rue Wygant Sullivan passed away February 10, 2022, at home, surrounded by family and pets.

Mom was born June 16, 1935, in Oil City, PA. During her high school years, she was a proud member of the National Honor Society and enjoyed playing clarinet in the school band. Life after high school took her as far away as Germany and Alaska, yet family was always a priority, and she stayed connected no matter where she lived.

She was actively involved with the Brownies and Jr. Girl Scouts programs as a young mother. Mom was also on a bowling team and relished playing games such as Pinochle, Cribbage, Tripoley, Phase 10, Scrabble, and many other board games. All family gatherings involved laughing at the dining room table while playing games.

Mom completed a secretarial course in the 1960s and became accomplished at shorthand, writing notes, and creating shopping lists. She accepted a job working for the State of Alaska in the old McKay Building in downtown Anchorage, AK, where she met her beloved husband, James (Jimmy) Sullivan.

Mom raised a garden, or at least a few pots on the porch, wherever she lived. She was an avid book reader and turned a love of bird watching into a lifelong hobby. She also shared her life with many dogs and a big, white cat named Rosebud.

Mom was preceded in death by her husband James (Jimmy); parents Edgar and Florence; siblings June, Adelbert (Del), Alan, and half-brother Richard. Barbara is survived by her children: Valorie, Tom, Darlene, Lisa, and Kelly; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and her half-siblings Michael and Carole.

There will not be a service. Barbara asked that her ashes be spread with her beloved dog, Roxanne.
