Obituary of John DeVore

John Daniel DeVore Passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Sunday, August 19, 2018. He was the youngest son of Laura and Frank DeVore. Born in Tacoma, WA, John attended Lowell and Bryant Elementary, Jason Lee Junior High, and was a proud graduate of Stadium High School Class of 1963. He briefly attended the University of Puget Sound, where he found something more than an education - his future wife, Linda. They were married in 1966, and later that same year, their son was born. He eventually earned an associate's degree from Tacoma Community College, where he also served as President of the Student Body from 1968-69. Continuing his sense of civic duty, John participated in several community organizations including the Eastside Improvement Board, McKinley Boosters, and Tacoma's Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). He assisted with organizing many of his class reunions and staying connected to the school and classmates he was so fond of. He was self-employed, operating a landscaping and lawn maintenance business. He was also a sales representative for the Bon Marche at Tacoma Mall. He was a member of New Life Fellowship Church of Graham. He enjoyed visiting people who were in the hospital or home-bound. He had also been involved with leading small groups, coordinating men's ministry activities, and being part of the Prime Timers group at his church. He had many interests including, but not limited to, old movies, music, traveling, taking scenic drives, cooking, family history, and photography. However, what mattered most to John was people and building relationships. He had a superlative knack for loving people. He was happiest when his time was spent with family and friends. His big heart, engulfing hugs, willingness to help, and jovial laughter were hallmarks of a life spent devoted to others. John was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Dick (and sister-in-law Carol) DeVore, Jim (and sister-in-law Dolores) DeVore, Frankie Hobaugh, and sister Nita Dunayski. He is survived by his wife Linda of 52 years, his son John and daughter-in-law Sheri, grandchildren Katie and Nathan, brother Hank (and sister-in-law Carol) DeVore, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. A celebration of his life will be held at Rainier View Christian Church-Graham Campus, located at 7420 224th Street E in Graham, WA 98338, on Saturday, October 6th, at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name to Sunny Skies Animal Rescue or a charity of your choice.
